What humidity control is trying to accomplish

The goal is not "dry air" for its own sake. It is keeping wood moisture content low enough that decay fungi and surface growth are not supported, and keeping surfaces above the dew point so condensation stops forming. In practice that usually means holding crawl space relative humidity somewhere in the 50s rather than the 70s or 80s.

Fix the sources before adding equipment

A dehumidifier cannot outrun liquid water or a wide-open vent. Before installation, the crawl space should have:

• Water entry handled through drainage and, if required, a sump pump
• Soil covered with a sealed vapor barrier
• Vents and penetrations sealed as part of encapsulation
• Failed insulation and debris removed

Sizing

Sizing is based on crawl space volume and the moisture load the space actually carries, not square footage alone. An undersized unit runs continuously and never reaches target; an oversized unit short-cycles and costs more than it needs to. Units built for crawl spaces are designed to operate in low ambient temperatures and in confined access.

Condensate drainage

Water removed from the air has to go somewhere. Options include gravity drain to an existing sump basin, a condensate pump routed outside, or a tie-in to an approved drain. A condensate line dumping onto the liner defeats the purpose.

Maintenance

Filters need cleaning or replacement, coils collect dust, and drain lines can clog. A humidity gauge — ideally one readable without crawling under the house — is the simplest way to know whether the system is still doing its job.
